Get your heating ready for winter

A photograph of a lady looking at her heating controls

After the hot summer we’ve had, it might seem a long time since the heating was put on.

But when the cold weather does return, you’ll want to make sure everything is working as it should – so now’s the perfect time to test your heating.

If everything's working - that's great. But if there's an issue, it's better to let us know now so we can fix it before the cold weather arrives.

Before you contact us to report a problem, here as some suggestions for things to check or try before you get in touch:

  • Check your thermostat temperature. Depending on the temperature in your house, you'll probably need to turn your thermostat up to allow your heating to work.
  • If a radiator is cold at the top, but hot at the bottom it might need bleeding. Watch this video that shows you how: How to bleed a radiator
  • If you have a credit meter - does it have enough credit on it so that your heating will work?
  • If you have a Baxi boiler, is it showing an E119 error code? That means the pressure of your boiler needs to be topped up a bit, which is quite an easy fix to do. Take a look at this short video: How to repair an E119 fault
  • If you're unsure sure how to use your heating controls, take a look at our How-to guide.

If, after trying all these things, your heating is still not working, please call us on 0115 915 2222.

Energy costs advice

Testing your heating for a short time like this will cost very little to do, but we know that the cost of energy in general continues to be high and is a struggle for many of us over the winter months in particular.

If you're struggling, we have lots of advice on this page of our website: Energy bills advice
